Industrial Butterfly Valve Selection Guide for Project Buyers

A practical guide to wafer, lugged and double-flanged butterfly valves for water, HVAC and industrial pipeline projects.

Industrial gate valve manufactured for water and pipeline systems

Selecting an industrial butterfly valve begins with the pipeline medium, pressure class, operating temperature, connection standard and required actuation. Project buyers should also confirm face-to-face dimensions, flange compatibility, seat material and corrosion protection before approving a quotation.

Wafer, lugged or double flanged

Wafer valves offer compact installation between flanges. Lugged valves provide threaded body lugs and can support specific end-of-line duties when correctly rated. Double-flanged valves are widely specified for larger diameters and municipal water infrastructure where alignment and mechanical stability are priorities.

Materials and actuation

Ductile iron bodies, stainless-steel discs and EPDM or NBR seats are common configurations. Manual gearboxes suit lower operating frequency, while pneumatic and electric actuators support automation, remote control and interlocking. GREYSEN reviews each valve schedule against the application rather than treating diameter as the only selection criterion.

What buyers should request

  • Approved drawings and dimensional data
  • Body, disc, stem and seat material confirmation
  • Pressure and functional test records
  • Coating specification and dry film thickness
  • Packaging and marking matched to the project
