Operation
Ball valves use quarter-turn motion; gate valves require multi-turn linear wedge travel.
Pressure loss
Full-bore versions of both can provide low loss when fully open.
Installation envelope
Gate valves need vertical stem space, while actuated ball valves need rotational operator space.
Service choice
Consider cycling frequency, size, pressure, solids, pigging, emergency closure and maintenance strategy.
