Butterfly Valve Testing Standards Explained

Understand shell, seat and functional testing commonly specified for industrial butterfly valves.

Butterfly Valve Testing Standards Explained

Testing verifies pressure containment and shut-off against an agreed standard. The purchase order should identify the standard, pressure basis, duration, medium and acceptance criteria.

Shell test

Checks the pressure-containing body and closure boundary at the specified test pressure.

Seat test

Assesses leakage across the closed valve in one or both directions as required.

Functional checks

Confirm smooth travel, position indication, stops and actuator accessories.

Records

When required, test reports should identify the valve, standard, pressure, duration, result and inspector.

Information to include with an enquiry

Provide nominal size, pressure rating, medium, temperature, connection standard, materials, operating method, required testing and project documentation. Greysen will review the duty and confirm the final configuration in the approved data sheet.
